Tile is the better surface. Panels solve the better problem. This is the whole comparison with the sales language taken out — costs you can model on your own shower, the failure modes of each, twelve specific situations, and a decision tool that will point you at tile if that is where your answers lead.

The honest version, before the details

Tile is the better surface. Ceramic and porcelain are harder, more customisable, and longer lived than any panel system on the market. Good tile can last fifty years. Anyone selling you panels who will not say that plainly is selling rather than advising, and you should weight their other claims accordingly.

But almost nobody replaces a shower because the tile failed.

They replace it because the grout failed. Or because they got tired of scrubbing a line that never quite came clean. Or because water found its way past a joint at the base of the wall and the first sign was a soft patch in the hallway floor two rooms away. Grout is a porous cement line running the full depth from the face of the tile back to the substrate, in the wettest room in the house, and it needs resealing every year or two for as long as the shower exists.

A shower wall kit removes that variable entirely. Each wall is one continuous sheet, so the face of the wall contains no joints at all. The only seams in the assembly are in the corners, where panels meet, and those are sealed with 100% silicone — non-porous, flexible, and not something you reseal on a calendar.

So the real question is not which surface is better. It is which failure mode you would rather own. Tile asks for maintenance and rewards it generously. Panels ask for almost nothing and, in exchange, will need replacing sooner. Both of those are legitimate deals. The mistake is choosing one while quietly assuming you will behave like someone who chose the other.

Part of the confusion in this comparison is that both categories contain wildly different products sold under the same word.

“Panels” covers six materials at four times the price spread

A $900 printed PVC surround and a $4,000 solid surface kit are both “shower wall panels.” They share a shape and almost nothing else. Thin printed PVC flexes when you press it and sounds hollow when you tap it, and it is the specific product responsible for the entire category’s reputation for looking like plastic. Solid surface is homogeneous cast material where the colour runs through the full thickness, so scratches sand out rather than exposing a different-coloured core.

Between those poles sit acrylic (the volume seller, excellent when thick and disappointing when thin), cultured marble (heavy, available in genuinely large seamless sheets, with a gel coat that is the entire wear surface), waterproof laminate (the most convincing wood and dramatic stone looks, but only the shower-rated systems belong in a shower), and fiberglass (cheapest, shortest lived, and honest about it). “Tile” ranges from $2 squares to $40 slabs

Likewise, comparing “tile” to “panels” on price is meaningless without saying which tile. Budget ceramic in a simple running bond is a genuinely cheap surface. Large-format porcelain that needs a levelling system and a skilled hand is not. Natural stone needs sealing on the stone as well as the grout, which is a maintenance obligation people frequently do not realise they have signed up for.

Porcelain is the better choice than ceramic in a continuously wet primary shower, being harder and denser, and the difference in material cost between the two is usually small relative to the labour.

Installation and disruption

This is the least ambiguous difference between the two, and for a lot of households it is the one that decides it.

A tiled shower is a sequenced job where every stage depends on the previous one being correct. Demolition, substrate, waterproofing, layout, setting, cure, grouting, cure, sealing. Realistically that is most of a week with the bathroom out of service, and several of those stages are unforgiving of mistakes that only reveal themselves later.

A panel kit is measure, cut, dry-fit, adhere, seal. One to two days, frequently one. And because several systems bond over sound existing tile, a panel job can skip demolition entirely — no dumpster in the driveway, no dust travelling through the house, and no discovering on day two what is actually behind the old wall.

That last row matters more than it looks. A badly waterproofed tile shower can look perfect and be quietly failing. A badly installed panel usually announces itself early.

If this is the only bathroom in the house, that five-to-seven day figure is not an inconvenience, it is a logistics problem involving relatives or a gym membership. It is completely reasonable to let that decide the question.

What each really costs

Published tile figures vary enormously because the category does. This Old House puts installed tile at roughly $3 to $30 per square foot, and a full tiled shower is commonly quoted from about $2,000 into five figures depending on the tile, the layout, and the market.

Panels land in a narrower band, which is genuinely useful when budgeting. But the spread in panel quotes is enormous for a completely different reason, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you take any appointment.

The quote gap. A 60 × 32 acrylic wall kit is roughly 69 square feet of panel. Bought as a kit and fitted by an independent installer, that is commonly a low-four-figure job. The same shower quoted by a full-service one-day-bath remodeler routinely comes back at $12,000 to $25,000, and homeowners have pushed back hard on those numbers in public. They are right to ask what the difference buys. Sometimes it is a genuine warranty and a licensed crew who will return if it leaks. Sometimes it is the cost of the marketing that reached you. The way to find out is to ask which manufacturer and model panel they are installing, then price that panel yourself. We break both paths apart here.

Tile has a version of this problem too, though it is less extreme. The same shower quoted by a tile setter working directly and by a full-service remodeling company will differ by a large multiple, and the difference is the same set of things: management, warranty, and customer acquisition.

A few things worth noticing as you move the inputs around. Set the labour market to DIY and the gap narrows sharply, because labour is where panels win most decisively and doing it yourself removes that advantage from both sides. Push the tile grade to budget ceramic and the panel grade to solid surface and tile wins outright on money, which is a real result and not a bug in the model. Extend the horizon past fifteen years and the grout maintenance line starts to dominate everything else.

The model does not price your time, and it deliberately does not try. If you enjoy the maintenance, or if a Saturday is free, the arithmetic looks different than if you are paying someone or resenting the job.

The maintenance reality

Grout is Portland cement with fine aggregate. It is porous by design, and in a shower it is soaking wet several times a day, every day, for decades. Sealer does not make it non-porous; it slows absorption for a period and then wears off, which is why it is reapplied on a cycle rather than once.

What that looks like in practice over a shower’s life:

  • Years 1–3. Everything looks new. Resealing feels optional. This is when most people stop doing it.
  • Years 3–6. Grout in the corners and at the pan joint starts to darken. Cleaning helps less each time, because the discolouration is absorbed rather than surface dirt.
  • Years 6–10. Hairline cracking appears at the changes of plane, where the wall meets the pan and where two walls meet. These joints move seasonally and rigid cement grout does not. Partial regrouting is normal here.
  • Years 10–20. Either the shower has been maintained and looks fine, or it is on the list to be replaced. There is not much middle ground.

None of this is dramatic and none of it makes tile a bad choice. It is genuinely twenty minutes with a bottle and a brush, once every eighteen months or so. The question is simply whether you will do it, and the honest answer for a lot of households is that they did not do it last time either.

Panel maintenance is a wipe with a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner. The one thing to avoid is abrasive powders and scouring pads, which will permanently dull a gloss or gel-coat face. The silicone corner beads are a wear item rather than a maintenance item: they last years, and when they eventually show their age you cut them out and lay a fresh bead, which is an afternoon every several years rather than an annual routine.

What fails, and where

Both systems fail at joints, almost never in the field of the wall. Knowing which joints tells you what to inspect and what to insist on during installation.

The pattern is the same in both columns: the material is not the risk, the transitions are. This is why a well-installed budget system reliably outperforms a badly installed premium one, and why the most useful question you can ask a contractor is about details rather than products.

In tile, the highest-risk detail is the change of plane. Rigid cement grout in a corner that moves will crack, which is why good tile work uses a flexible sealant rather than grout at inside corners and at the pan joint. If a quote does not mention that, ask.

In panels, the highest-risk detail is the panel-to-pan connection. The panel must lap over the pan upstand so water running down the wall is directed into the pan rather than behind it. Getting that sequence backwards is one of the few panel installation errors that is genuinely difficult to correct afterwards.

How they look up close

At a distance and in photographs, good panels are convincing. In person, at arm’s length, people can often tell, and the honest criticism of acrylic is that it can read as preformed plastic no matter how nice the pattern is.

What separates convincing panels from obvious ones:

  • Thickness. Thin sheet flexes under hand pressure and sounds hollow when tapped. That single detail gives away a budget panel faster than any pattern, and it is the first thing to check on a showroom sample.
  • Finish. Matte stone patterns hold up to close inspection. High gloss shows every repeat in the print and telegraphs every imperfection in the wall behind it.
  • Edges and trim. Where the panel meets the pan, the door jamb, and the outside corner is where cheap systems look cheap. Bullnose or integral edges beat a separate plastic J-trim every single time.
  • Pattern scale. Moulded subway-tile panels almost always read as moulded panels, because real subway tile has grout shadow lines with genuine depth and a panel has a pressed impression of one. Stone and marble patterns are much harder to catch out, because stone has no repeating grid for the eye to lock onto.

Tile has its own tells, incidentally, and cheap tile work is more obviously cheap than a mid-grade panel. Uneven grout lines, lippage between tiles, an awkward cut at the ceiling, and a badly planned layout that puts a sliver tile in the most visible corner will undermine an expensive tile faster than the tile can rescue them. A well-fitted panel shower looks considerably better than a poorly executed tile one.

Do this before you decide. Get a physical panel sample and hold it in your own bathroom, in your own light, next to a tile sample. Showroom lighting is designed to flatter, and the difference between what a panel looks like under halogen display lights and under a single ceiling fixture at 6am is not small.

Resale value, honestly

The received wisdom that panels hurt resale is outdated, but it is not entirely wrong either. It depends on which panel and which house.

In a primary bathroom of an expensive home in a market where buyers are comparing finishes closely, thin gloss panel reads as a cost-cutting decision and buyers notice. Tile still carries more prestige at that end of the market, and that is a real effect rather than snobbery.

In a guest bath, a basement bath, a secondary bathroom, or a rental, the surface category barely registers. What buyers notice is whether the bathroom looks clean, updated, and cared for. A crisp panel shower in a stone finish achieves that; a tired tiled shower with dark grout does not, regardless of what the tile cost originally.

The more useful framing is that quality of materials and installation matters more to buyers than surface type alone, and that low-maintenance finishes have become a selling point rather than a compromise as buyer preferences have shifted. Water management, which nobody explains

Here is the thing that gets lost in the surface comparison: neither the tile nor the panel is what keeps water out of your framing.

In a tiled shower, the waterproofing is a separate system behind the tile — a sheet membrane or a liquid-applied coating over the substrate, lapped and sealed at every corner and penetration. Tile and grout are permeable. Water passes through grout routinely and normally; the membrane is what stops it. A tiled shower with beautiful tile and compromised waterproofing is a failure waiting for a schedule, and you will not be able to see it.

In a panel shower, the panel face is the primary barrier, which is a simpler arrangement with fewer things to get wrong. But the substrate behind still matters: panels belong over cement board, a waterproof-faced backer, or sound existing tile, never over paper-faced drywall in the wet zone. And the joints — corners, pan connection, valve and head penetrations — are doing real work.

This is genuinely one of the strongest arguments for panels and it is rarely made well. The panel system concentrates the waterproofing into a small number of visible, inspectable joints. The tile system distributes it across a hidden membrane that you have to take on trust. Both work. One of them lets you see whether it is working.

Using both, which more people should consider

The comparison is usually framed as either-or, and it does not have to be. A hybrid gets you the maintenance benefit where it matters and the material quality where it shows.

Approaches that work:

  • Panels in the shower, tile outside it. The wet zone gets the low-maintenance surface; the visible bathroom walls and floor get real tile. The transition happens at the shower opening, where a trim profile is expected anyway.
  • Panels on the two side walls, tile on the back wall. The back wall is the one you actually look at. The side walls are the ones you scrub. This is a genuinely sensible allocation of both money and effort.
  • Panels everywhere, tile in the niche. A tiled niche gives the eye something to land on and reads as considered rather than economised.

The detail that needs care is the transition between the two materials. Panel and tile expand at different rates, so the joint needs a proper trim profile and a flexible movement joint rather than being butted together and caulked. Done well it looks deliberate. Done carelessly it looks like you ran out of money halfway.

“Panels are just plastic”

True of thin printed PVC, which is a real product that a lot of people have had a bad experience with. Not true of solid surface, which is the same cast material used for seamless countertops, or of cultured marble, which is crushed stone in resin. The category contains genuinely cheap products and genuinely good ones under one name, which is exactly why the criticism sticks.

  5. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and does it cover labour or only material?

If you are quoting tile

  1. What waterproofing system, sheet membrane or liquid-applied? Either is fine; no clear answer is not.
  2. How are the changes of plane detailed? You want flexible sealant at inside corners and the pan joint, not rigid grout.
  3. Is the pan being pre-sloped, and how is the drain assembly being tied into the waterproofing?
  4. What grout, and is it cement or an epoxy or urethane alternative? The alternatives cost more and dramatically reduce the maintenance argument against tile.
  5. Who comes back if it leaks in year three?

That last question is the same in both lists, and it is the most important one on either.
