Accessible design stopped being a niche
The NKBA’s 2026 Bath Trends Report, drawn from a survey of nearly 700 industry professionals, found that around a third now consider aging-in-place a mainstream trend — and it groups grab bars, curbless entries, benches, and wider doorways with the features that make a primary bath read as more luxurious rather than clinical.
That matches what actually gets built. Curbless showers are increasingly specified by people with no accessibility requirement whatsoever, for reasons that have nothing to do with mobility: they are easier to clean, they make a small bathroom feel larger, there is no lip collecting soap scum, and they look better.
Which means the framing of this decision has changed. It used to be “do I need an accessible shower?” It is now closer to “is there any reason not to build this way?” — and the honest answer, for most remodels where the floor is already open, is usually no.
Why panels suit these showers specifically
The case for panels in a barrier-free shower is stronger than the general case for panels, and for reasons that are functional rather than aesthetic.
A much bigger wet zone
Without a curb containing the spray, water reaches further out and further up the walls. Every additional square foot of wet wall is additional grout to maintain in a tiled shower, and no additional maintenance at all in a panelled one.
Constant contact at wall level
A shower chair, a wheelchair footplate, or a walker contacts the walls regularly and sometimes hard. Panels take that on a continuous surface. Tile takes it on edges and grout joints, which is where tile chips.
Easier where care is involved
Where someone is assisting, the difference between wiping a smooth wall and scrubbing grout is not cosmetic. It is a recurring physical task removed from a caregiver’s week, every week.
Nothing to scrub at chair height
Grout at 30 inches sees more soap film and more contact than grout at 70 inches. It is the band that discolours first in any shower, and it is the band a seated user looks at.
Blocking: the decision with a deadline
Almost everything in a bathroom can be changed later. Fixtures, finishes, bars, seats, shower heads — all retrofittable at modest cost.
Blocking cannot. It sits in the framing, behind the cement board, behind the panel. Once the panel is bonded, the blocking is unreachable without taking the wall apart, and a bonded panel does not usually survive removal in reusable condition.

The second thing that changes in a barrier-free shower is the joint at the bottom of the wall, and it changes in a way that makes it more demanding rather than less.
A barrier-free shower uses either a low-profile pan with a minimal threshold or a flush pan set into the floor structure. Either way the panel-to-pan joint sits lower and gets substantially wetter than the equivalent joint in a curbed shower, because there is no curb interrupting the flow and the water is spread over a wider area.
That joint needs the same treatment as any panel installation, executed more carefully:
- The panel laps over the pan upstand, so water running down the wall is directed into the pan. This is the one installation error that cannot be undone, and a barrier-free shower is the least forgiving place to make it.
- Drainage across a wide opening. Linear and trench drains are common here because they move water across the full width rather than relying on slope toward a single centre point. That also means less aggressive floor slope, which matters for a chair.
- The floor structure has to accommodate it. A flush pan needs depth, which frequently means modifying joists. This is the part that makes retrofitting a curbless shower genuinely expensive and building one during an existing remodel comparatively cheap.
Which panel material
Solid surface or thick acrylic, and the reasoning is specific to this application rather than general preference.
A barrier-free shower has more wall area getting wet, more contact from equipment, and a longer expected service life, because these are usually built with the intention of not doing it again. Solid surface is the only common panel material that can be repaired in place — colour runs through the full thickness, so a scuff from a footplate or a chair arm sands out rather than exposing a different-coloured core.

Build it now, or add it later?
The honest answer is: build the hidden parts now, and add the visible parts whenever you like.
Twenty minutes and some lumber. Impossible to add without removing the panel.
An hour with a drill, provided the blocking is there. Removable if you sell.
Needs floor structure. Retrofitting means opening the floor again.
Bolts to blocking. Choose the model when you know who is using it.
A linear drain is a plumbing and structure decision, not a fixture choice.
A fitting change. Do it whenever it becomes useful.

Two conclusions worth drawing from that table. The floor structure is the real cost driver and the real constraint, which is why the decision has to be made at design stage rather than during finishing. And the cheapest line — blocking — is also the one that becomes impossible later, which makes skipping it the worst value decision available in the whole project.
Controls, reach, and the things that get overlooked
Bars and thresholds get all the attention. The details below get almost none, and they are the ones people report actually mattering day to day once the shower is in use.
Valve position
A valve at standard height is reachable standing and awkward seated. In a shower designed for seated use, the valve moves lower and, critically, toward the entry — so it can be reached and turned on from outside the spray before anyone gets wet. That single change removes the cold blast that makes assisted bathing unpleasant.
This is a plumbing decision made during rough-in, and it interacts directly with the panel: the valve penetration is cut through the panel at a fixed position, so getting the valve where it should be has to happen before the panel is measured, never after. Panel thickness also affects whether the trim will seat, which is a second reason to settle valve position early.
Handheld on a slide bar
Close to essential in any shower used seated or with assistance, and useful in every other shower too. The slide bar itself needs blocking — it is a bar mounted to the wall like any other, and people frequently plan blocking for grab bars while forgetting the slide bar is also a wall-mounted load.
Worth noting that a slide bar and a vertical grab bar occupy similar wall real estate, so plan them together rather than discovering they want the same 18 inches of wall.
Niches at seated height
A niche at standing shoulder height is unreachable from a seated position, which means soap and shampoo end up on the floor — a genuine trip and slip hazard in exactly the shower where that matters most. If seated use is likely, put a niche at around 40 to 44 inches, or add a second lower one.
Remember that a panel-lined niche loses the panel thickness on every face, so frame it generously. A niche framed at 12 by 24 and lined in half-inch material finishes closer to 11 by 23.
The threshold you did not think about
Getting into the shower is only half of it. The bathroom door width, the space to turn once inside the room, and whether the door swings inward over the floor area a chair needs are all part of the same problem. A perfectly executed roll-in shower behind a 24-inch door that swings inward is not an accessible bathroom.
Barrier-free, curbless, roll-in — what the words mean
Describes the threshold: there is no lip to step over. Says nothing about the size of the shower or what else it has. A small curbless shower is still curbless.
Describes the use case: a wheelchair can enter directly and turn. Implies both no threshold and enough floor area to manoeuvre, which is the part people forget.
The broadest term. Generally implies the whole shower has been designed for access — threshold, floor area, drainage, bars, seating, controls reachable from seated height.
A smaller shower designed for someone who transfers from a chair to a fixed seat rather than rolling in. Different dimensions, different bar layout, and often a better fit in a small bathroom.

When the rules actually apply
This matters and it is widely misunderstood, in both directions.
In your own home, the ADA does not apply. It governs places of public accommodation and commercial facilities, not private residences. A homeowner adapting their own bathroom is free to put a bar wherever it works for them, at whatever height suits, with no dimensional requirement to satisfy.
That said, the ADA dimensions encode a lot of accumulated research about what actually works for real people, so they are worth reading as guidance even where they are not binding. “Not required” is not the same as “not useful.”
Where it does apply: commercial projects and public accommodation are bound outright — bar heights, seat positions, clear floor space, and threshold limits are prescribed rather than advisory. Multifamily and rental housing sit in a third category with its own rules that vary by construction date and financing. Making it not look institutional
The institutional look does not come from accessibility. It comes from white plastic, chrome hospital hardware, and features added as afterthoughts rather than designed in.
What changes it:
- Match the bar finish to the fixtures. A matte black or brushed brass bar next to matching taps reads as a design decision. A chrome bar next to black fixtures reads as a medical appliance.
- Stone-look panels, not gloss white. Matte stone patterns carry the room. Gloss white is what makes a bathroom look like a facility.
- A linear drain. It solves the drainage problem and simultaneously reads as a high-end detail, because it is one.
- A built-in bench rather than a fold-down seat, if the space allows and the need is permanent. A bench in the same material as the walls looks like a spa; a white plastic fold-down seat looks like what it is.
- Design the bar in, do not add it on. A horizontal bar that lines up with a niche or a bench edge looks intentional. The same bar floating at an arbitrary height does not.
